Project Partner Training – Week 3

To Walk, Fly and Run

Getting around in Second Life does take a little practice.  You can use the arrow keys on your keyboard to make your avatar walk forwards and backwards and turn to the left and right. Page up makes your avatar fly and page down makes it land. (On a Mac use the letter E to fly and C to land. Double clicking the letter R will make your avatar run. These are the quickest and easiest control to use for movement. However there is also a set of icon controlled movements.

Clicking the Move button opens the MovementControls window, which looks like this:

Move

The Movement Controls are used to enable your avatar to walk, run and fly.

  • Walking: If you wish to move at a walking pace click the icon on the left at the bottom of the Movement Controls.
  • Running: If walking is too slow for you click the middle icon at the bottom of the Movement Controls.
  • Flying: If you wish to fly, click the icon on the right at the bottom of the Movement Controls. Use the arrow keys of the Movement Controls in the same way as you use them for walking and the Up and Down arrows that appear when you select Flying to fly up and down. Click on the Stop Flying button to stop flying. In some areas of SL flying is forbidden, and then the Flying icon will not work and there is a symbol in the menu bar showing flying crossed out.

The big up and down arrows in the middle of the window are used to make your avatar walk forwards and backwards.

The bent arrows to the left and right of the up and down arrows are used to make your avatar turn to the left and right

The left and right arrows underneath the four arrows in the middle of this window are used to make your avatar walk to the left and the right.

The two broken arrows on the right make your avatar jump up and down if you are walking or running – which may be useful for jumping over a wall, for example. When you are flying (see below) they control your up and down movements

To Jump

To make it look as if your avatar is jumping press the Page Up key briefly. If you want the avatar to move forward when it jumps press the forward arrow with Page Up.

To Sit

To sit on a chair right click on the seat and choose “Sit here,” “Relax,” or “Chill.” The words used in scripts can vary but it will be similar.  You may see a pose ball on a chair, right click on that and choose Sit, it may for for a completely different animation but you “Sit” on the pose ball to start the animation and “Stand” in the middle of the bottom of the screen to stop the animation and return to standing on the ground.
