Panel Discussion on the Use of Machinima in the Language Classroom

 Using Machinima in the foreign language classroom: Reporting on the EU-funded CAMELOT Project.

Dr Michael Thomas, UCLan (UK), co-ordinator of the CAMELOT Project, moderated a panel discussion with Sandra Gasber, LinguaTV (Germany), Jana Cepickova, University of West Bohemia (Czech Republic) and Christel Schneider, CSiTrain (Germany), presenting the outcomes of the CAMELOT Project at Leuphana University in Lüneburg on 21st November 2015. After a short introduction to the CAMELOT Project’s aims and objectives, Sandra Gasber shared her field testing results, using machinima for vocational language training on the web, comparing the advantages and challenges of shooting Machinima in a 3D environment with creating videos in real-life locations.Jana Cepickova shared results of field testing Machinima with Engineering students, learning English for technical purposes in the Czech Republic. Finally, Christel Schneider shared the results of her research as participating observer in two Machinima Open Online Training courses, highlighting the benefits and challenges of using and creating Machinima in language teaching and emphasising the potential for language learners when producing their own Machinima in virtual worlds.

Dr Michael Thomas gave a powerful presentation on ‘Critical Perspectives on CALL and the Potential of Task-,Project- and Phenomenon-based – Learning with Technology at the international conference on Language-Learning-Technology (20-21 November) at the Institute of English Studies, Centre for Modern Languages, Leuphana Universität, Lüneburg (Germany) today. In his talk he referred to the great results of the CAMELOT project.
